Album Details

Release Date: January 4, 1967
Label:
Rhino

The debut album by the American rock band The Doors. Originally released in significantly different stereo and mono mixes, the album features the breakthrough single "Light My Fire", extended with a substantial instrumental section mostly omitted on the single release, and the lengthy song "The End" with its Oedipal spoken-word section. The Doors credit the success of their first album to being able to work the songs out night after night at the Whisky a Go Go and the London Fog.

*Featured song samples are taken from the 40th Anniversary release.

Reviews

  1. The Doors stands as the L.A. foursome's most successful marriage of rock poetics with classically tempered hard rock — a stoned, immaculate classic.

    Parke Puterbaugh
  2. The combination of Ray Manzarek's baroque organ and keyboards, drummer John Densmore's jazz background, Robby Krieger's classically-influenced guitar work and songwriting contributions, and Morrison's Dionysian mythology and beat-style poetry created a unique symbiosis of rock, blues, punk, bossa nova, spoken-word, and jazz that can't be defined with less than a handful of hyphens.

    SAL CINQUEMANI
  3. The Doors is an album of magnitude. Thanks to the calm surefootedness of the group, the producer, the record company, there are no flaws

    Paul Williams
