The song (or rather the musicalized poem) tells the tale that some galleon (presumably a Spanish one) had to throw away the horses that were carried aboard during a storm in order to release some weight and avoid sinking.
Probably seen from the horses' vantage point...

Why would horses be jettisoned off ship? I don't get that one.

The second one is depressing or for more the artwork.
