I found this earlier and had to share.. it brought a tear to the eye.
@the green lizard queen awww.. what a great pic! RIP Ray.. @mrmohs great story! I wish I could have met him. He seemed like such a humble man.
rays death was such a shock...although robby and john knew what was going on before ray passed...a sad day for all of us...thats for sure
may 21 will always have a new meaning for me now....
I saw Ray playing the Golden Scarab at the Whiskey in
1976 ? Two sets. We drove from Phoenix for the show.
Strangest thing occurred.
A few weeks before I had thrown a huge house party.
Must have been a 4th of July party.
Some dude was there named Van. Never met him before.
But we got along famously and partied well into the early morning.
Party over. Probably never see that dude again.
So here we are at the Whiskey. First time ever there.
4 dudes from Phoenix. Were sitting up in the high-rise stands.
The house lights come on for the beginning of the second set.
Totally Blown away.
Some dude starts waving his arms at us,
yelling, coming towards Us.
Well damn! Its Van! He recognized us.
So after intro’s and stuff,
we ask what he doing there?
Tells us he’s roadie for Ray Manzarek.
No way!! Way!
So I say: can you get me backstage?
He most certainly did.
I was in the back upstairs room of the Whiskey
partying w/ Ray & Company!!
Till dawn’s early light.
I walked out with Ray and
watched him drive away in a Saab down Hollywood.
One of the supreme nights of my life!!!!!!
And I never saw Van again.
So dude if your reading this and
it jogs a memory
Yes it was in the news. Also they shut the lights for 5 minutes or were silent for 5 minutes. So was the house of blues
