Here is the Hollywood Bowl picture I was talking about. I couldn't put it in the original thread. But this one matches the sound check one photo from that day.
if your sad & your
go out & buy
around the pool
comfortable looking shoes -
on the film there are people constantly walking in front of the long shot - when i get sloshed and watch i'm like SIT DOWN MF'S it's time to concentrate on the performance - then i crack up.
been there myself in '88. nobody home, just parked in desolate lot, burned one, slammed a 40 oz cold one, then walked around the whole place. there was a couple of busloads of chinese tourists doing something in that other building right next to the bowl though, but i was happy to have it all to myself that day - high noon, literally. that stage was about chest hi on me and i'm 5'-10" if that gives you a better perspective. i also remember making a long distance call from the phone booth that was right there - most likely gone now. when my friend Chuck answered i said "hello from Hollywood!", and he goes "what? who is this?". i hung up, laughed hard, then continued my day. i was on my way to San Diego to see my bro for Christmas.
yep, comfortable looking shoes
That makes lots of sense
making the pool a stage
Jim wanted no barrier
between him and the audience
I guess they called it a reflecting pool. I read it was there from '53-'72. I think they put folding seats in it now. Probably premium seating! It was right in front of the stage. I'm pulling from my memory, but from what I recall it was covered and there was astro turf put over it. I don't know the direction the stage faces. I'll have to check the DVD. If I am wrong, I'll admit it! :)
that real perceptive Qhwy
how close is this fountain to the shell?
on a compass which way was the Doors facing/playing into ?
I would imagine east-- sun setting behind them?
Do you think they set up the stadium seats for the show?
Is there permanent seating at the HB?
If Morrison fell on his cat walk
How deep is the fountain?
On the HB DVD they discussed playing on the fountain. I will try and find it. It might have been Bruce B. who said it. It struck me b/c I never heard that before.
wow. bet lots of folks got a free show,
that July night,
looking down from Mullholland Dr.
which blows up my inside show theory
no. the concert took place inside
Jim just did the sound check outside
Doors. always an innovative band
Yes, the Hollywood bowl is a beautiful outdoor venue. Like I mentioned before, the fountain Jim is balancing on was covered and that is where they performed right over the fountain! You can look down on the whole property from Mullholland Dr. in L.A. We toured the venue and walked right in and up to the fountain and walked the grounds. No one cared. It was pretty cool!
