The Doors being by far my favorite band of all time, and also appreciating the Beat Poets and their influence on Jim, I couldn't have possibly missed Ray and Michael McClure's performance at Washington State University in 2000. Jim very much would have been proud that night, as Ray's imaginative, lovely grand piano notes swirled around Michael's very Morrison-like and evocative poetry. Jim's spirit was definitely present that magical night! But meeting Ray and his new partner in musical poetics after the show was a greater pleasure even still. Both men were, of course, thoughtful, indulging, and respectful listeners (I blathered out a short rap regarding some of the aforementioned information, and spoke of being born the year Jim died, and feeling an uncanny connection to the Doors' music), and signed my copies of The Golden Scarab and Rebel Lions, respectively. Knowing how McClure had mentored and encouraged Jim to publish his poetry, besides being a close friend, and Ray's place in Jim's and The Doors' life - what does one say to truly convey the sense of joy, awe, and appreciation of both men's talents in a couple of minutes? Thank you, Ray, for your unique contribution to music, your intelligent humanity, for your lack of rock star ego whatsoever...and for going out there on the edge with Jim, Robby, and John (and Michael) and sharing your talents with us! You and Jim have broken on through, but will never breakaway from our hearts.
